India’s ongoing political protests have now reached the streets of London. Hundreds of Indians gathered at Parliament Square on Saturday, October 17, raising slogans against the BJP-led government and the Election Commission of India over allegations of electoral irregularities. However, the demonstration also witnessed a counter-protest, with supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi arriving at the same location to express their support for the government. The protest, organised by the Opposition Congress and UK-based Indian student groups under the banner “Stop Vote Chori”, took place near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at Parliament Square. Demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and criticised the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that the exercise could deprive legitimate voters of their voting rights. YouTuber and activist Dhruv Rathee, who had earlier urged Indians in London to join the demonstration, addressed the gathering as a keynote speaker. Rathee said the objective was to raise awareness among Indians and NRIs about alleged electoral irregularities, while emphasising that he was not seeking foreign interference in India’s internal affairs. Videos from Parliament Square showed demonstrators waving flags, holding placards and chanting slogans. Across the gathering, a smaller group of government supporters raised chants of “Modi, Modi”, leading to a heated exchange as both sides attempted to make themselves heard. Metropolitan Police officers remained present to keep the rival groups separated. The London demonstration came a day after similar rival gatherings outside the Indian High Commission, where protesters demanded electoral accountability while pro-government supporters defended Modi’s leadership. The protests are part of a wider political controversy surrounding the Election Commission’s voter-roll revision exercise, which opposition groups have challenged over concerns about transparency and voter exclusions.
