She asks her fellow dolls if they ever think about dying, the music screeches to a halt, and the biggest blockbuster of the decade begins with an existential crisis in pink. Barbie (2023) is Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar phenomenon, the film that turned a toy into a cultural reckoning, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling leading the most audacious studio comedy of its era all the way to Oscar night. The mood is plastic perfection cracking beautifully. Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie lives the dream loop of Barbie Land, beach days, choreographed parties, presidents and physicists all named Barbie, until flat feet and intrusive thoughts exile her to the Real World with Gosling’s Ken stowing away, desperate for her attention and about to discover something far more dangerous: patriarchy, which he imports home like a souvenir, transforming Dreamhouses into Mojo Dojo Casa Houses in the film’s most gleeful satirical swing. Gerwig loads every frame with wit and ache, America Ferrera’s showstopping monologue about the impossible contradictions of being a woman, the quiet bus bench moment where Barbie tells an elderly stranger she is beautiful, Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie dispensing splits-legged wisdom, and Gosling’s Oscar-nominated Ken weaponizing insecurity into the power ballad I’m Just Ken, a Grammy-winning joke that doubles as a thesis. Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For carries the finale, a doll choosing messy humanity, tears, aging, and all, over eternal perfection. This is blockbuster storytelling with a soul, comedy and philosophy sharing the same convertible. What makes it a must-see is the trick it pulls: two hours of neon jokes smuggling in the sincerest question in cinema, what were any of us made for? Save this post for your modern classics collection, and share it with the friend whose group chat still splits between Barbie energy and Kenergy.
