ʻOHANA SPEAKS OUT FOLLOWING FATAL OCEAN VIEW POLICE SHOOTING

Following the fatal officer-involved shooting in Ocean View on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the man’s sister, Salote Teisina, reached out to share photographs of her brother and a heartfelt message asking the community to remember him for the life he lived rather than the circumstances surrounding his death.

Message from his sister, Salote Teisina:

“Aloha,

I’m not sure if this matters to you guys but I don’t want the last image of my brother being circulated to be a reflection of his demons but rather a reminder that we never know what someone is going through and give them grace. If possible, could you remind the world that he was loved and cared for? He had autonomy over his choices but he had people who loved and wanted him to heal.

I’ve attached pictures of my brother in hopes that would help to depict his life rather than a mistake.

Mahalo,
Salote Teisina”

I also want to remind everyone that you never truly know what someone is going through or what they’re struggling with behind closed doors. Addiction is real, and we are facing a mental health crisis. I say this from personal experience because I myself came back from a very dark place in my life. There was even an incident in my past where I could have been shot because I wasn’t in my right state of mind. I understand what it’s like to struggle, to lose yourself, and to make decisions while you’re not thinking clearly. I was fortunate enough to make it out alive and turn my life around. Not everyone gets that opportunity.

This doesn’t mean we excuse harmful actions, but we can still recognize someone’s humanity and have compassion for the struggles they may have faced. A person’s worst moment should not be the only thing they’re remembered for.

My deepest condolences to his ʻohana, his braddah, and everyone who loved and cared for him. Please be respectful in the comments. His family is grieving, and they deserve compassion during this difficult time.

Emotional crossing the finish line because I’m so proud of myself. So proud that I chose to do something I was uncertain about and underprepared for. Proud that I stayed positive when things got tough. Proud that I continued to believe in myself through the uncertainty. Emotional because I did something really hard and came out the other side better.
