ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD, I WANT TO SHARE SOMETHING PERSONAL. 🤍

I was once made to feel that being an “attractive woman” working in my job in conservation was somehow a problem. That my appearance somehow was a problem for the role.

What followed was a deeply painful period of being targeted, undermined and subjected to false accusations and sabotage. The situation became so intolerable that I ultimately was forced to resign from a career I had worked incredibly hard to build.

The stress, anguish and emotional toll were immense. During the aftermath, I developed dermatographia, a physical condition that was triggered by the extraordinary stress & pain I experienced in that.

But something else came out of that experience.

I founded African Safari Conservation.

I decided that nobody else would determine my worth, silence my voice or dictate what I was capable of achieving. I became my own boss.

I rarely post photographs of myself on this platform because I have always wanted the focus to remain on wildlife, conservation and the extraordinary people working to protect our natural world.

But today, on International Day of the Girl Child, I wanted to share a little of the woman behind this page.

To every girl growing up in a world that will sometimes judge her appearance before her intelligence, question her ambition, undermine her confidence or attempt to make her smaller to accommodate someone else’s insecurities:

Never allow anyone to convince you that your appearance defines your abilities, that your intelligence makes you intimidating, or that your ambition is something for which you should apologise.

You can be feminine and formidable. Beautiful and brilliant. Compassionate and courageous. None of these qualities are mutually exclusive.

And sometimes, the very people who try hardest to bring you down inadvertently give you the determination to build something far greater than anything they could ever have imagined.

Happy International Day of the Girl Child. To every woman who has been pushed down! Keep standing strong! I see you. 🤍
