If you told 2016 Cassie, who had just quit her job at GoodLife to start her own business, that 10 years later she’d see ALL DAY FIT across a building in downtown Toronto… would she believe you? Honestly? Yeah. I think she would. That being said, All Day Fit has become more special than I could have imagined. I didn’t know I’d sign a 10-year commercial lease, build a gym from the ground up, or create a space hundreds of people would call their training home. But I knew I wanted to change the way people experience fitness. How they feel about their bodies, their health, and what they’re capable of. I wanted coaching to be personal, education to matter, relationships to come first, and people to feel like they belong. The last decade has been full of risks, long days, hard conversations, doubt, and more learning curves than I can count. From GoodLife, to St. Andrew’s Park, the top floor of Cali Love and lululemon, Cardio Go, Training Lane… and now, OFFICIALLY OUR OWN SPACE. Each space, each coach who joined us, and each person who trusted us with their health helped shape All Day Fit. For 9 years, we built a business, a reputation, a team, and a community without ever having our name on a building. Now, in year 10, that name is across the windows of our very own space in downtown Toronto. 🥹 It’s surreal because none of this happened overnight. It happened one client, one session, one relationship, and one leap of faith at a time. And while having our own space is a HUGE milestone, the thing I’m most proud of isn’t the building. It’s what we built that made the building possible. The people. The relationships. The standard of coaching. The genuine care for one another. To everyone who’s been part of this journey, whether you trained with us in a park 10 years ago or just walked through our doors, THANK YOU. We built something worth putting our name on long before we had a building to put it on. 💗💚
Here’s a snippet from the squat component of my recent Strength System seminar in Brisbane. I noticed @lockedinperformance_ performing a stiletto squat with an exaggerated heel elevation, but using a low bar position. His technique wasn’t bad. In fact, it was quite good. But his bar position wasn’t ideal for what he was trying to achieve. The objective of a stiletto squat is to maximise knee flexion and quadriceps involvement. Elevating the heels allows the knees to travel further forward while maintaining a more upright torso. Why is this important? Because the further the knees travel forward relative to the barbell’s line of force, the greater the moment arm at the knee joint, increasing the demand on the quadriceps. This is where bar position matters. A low bar position generally requires more forward torso lean to maintain balance. This shifts the hips backwards, increasing the moment arm at the hip while reducing it at the knee. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it’s one of the reasons a low bar squat can be so effective for lifting heavier weights. But if your objective is to maximise quadriceps development, why deliberately compromise the position you’re trying to create? When I asked the lifter what he was trying to achieve, his answer was exactly what I expected, “quads”. We moved the bar into a high bar position, and immediately he was able to achieve a more upright squat with greater forward knee travel. But wouldn’t a front squat be even better? Not necessarily. A front squat allows a similarly upright torso, but the front rack position can limit how much weight you’re able to lift. A high bar squat can achieve a very similar torso position and range of motion, while generally providing a stronger platform to support heavier loads. Squatting is about understanding the objective of the exercise and selecting the technique that best achieves it. If your goal is to lift the heaviest weight possible, a low bar position is advantageous. If your goal is to maximise quadriceps development, a high bar squat with elevated heels is one of my favourite options.
