UCCA Center for Contemporary Art

“Ahmed Mater: Antenna” unfolds a dynamic portrait of one of Saudi Arabia’s most influential contemporary artists, tracing his practice from early canvases to ambitious land-art interventions. Bringing together archival material, exhibition views, and behind-the-scenes moments, this exhibition explores Mater’s engagement with history, faith, and transformation—reflecting the dualities and complexities that define his work.

Through photography, installation, and moving image, Mater acts as both witness and conduit, capturing the evolving cultural landscape of the Kingdom. This exhibition is curated by UCCA Director @philiptinari and co-organized with the Visual Arts Commission, one of the 11 sector-specific commissions under the Ministry of Culture, as part of the official program of the China-Saudi Cultural Year and follows on UCCA’s continued involvement in the Saudi art scene that began with its work on the first Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale in 2021.
