One wrong IV fluid can cause:

Fluid overload
Cerebral edema
Worsened dehydration

Here’s the rule:

Isotonic (NS, LR) → blood loss, low BP, dehydration
Hypotonic (0.45% NS) → DKA, not brain injuries
Hypertonic (3% saline) → hyponatremia, but risky in heart failure

When in doubt? Start with isotonic.

Only switch if you know the patient’s specific condition.
