NCLEX Tips for crutches 🩼🦴⁠ ⁠ ⁠ The NCLEX will test you on your knowledge and ability to educate a patient on crutch, cane, or walker use. Assistive devices are popular! (both in life and on the NCLEX ;) ) So know these points:⁠ ⁠ 🩼Crutches: ⁠ -Hold crutches 1-2 inches below the axilla, they should never sit IN the armpit. ⁠ -The weight and strength produced to move should come from the hands and arms, never the underarms⁠ -Never SWING through – this can lead to falls. One wrong IV fluid can cause: Fluid overload Cerebral edema Worsened dehydration Here’s the rule: Isotonic (NS, LR) → blood loss, low BP, dehydration Hypotonic (0.45% NS) → DKA, not brain injuries Hypertonic (3% saline) → hyponatremia, but risky in heart failure When in doubt?
