Stockdale Edges Frontier In Nail-Biter

Going into last spring, Stockdale hadn’t lost to Frontier in a softball game in a decade.
Then the Titans won the River League title in 2024, sweeping the Mustangs in all three games.
For Stockdale coach Amanda Hockett, who has been at the helm for the Mustangs since 2009, taking both league games against Frontier this week, including a 2-1 victory at home on Friday during the program’s “Salute To Service” game, the pain of last season might have vanquished.
“After going 0-3 against them last year, I think they really were just taking it one game at a time and they know their goal is to try and get back to a league title,” Hockett said.
Frontier (8-7, 0-2) jumped on the board early as Baden Conley scored on a two-out double from Tanisha Escarcega to give the Titans a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Then both pitchers settled in.
Frontier senior Taylor Sloss shut the Mustangs (10-3, 2-0) down for the first four innings.
“Taylor threw a great game on Wednesday (in a 4-0 Stockdale win) and today,” Hockett said.
Her counterpart, Stockdale junior Nevaeh Garcia, was equally impressive in the circle, shutting out the Titans the final five innings on Friday.
“She just hones in and she is our go-to everytime,” Hockett said. “She’s an animal back there.”
Garcia got run support late.
Kaitlyn Urbano hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the fifth inning and scored on a double by Addison Ochoa on the next at-bat to tie the game at 1-1.
Then Stockdale scored the go-ahead run on a controversial play in the bottom of the sixth.
A grounder by Aamya Harrison was fielded by Conley at second who attempted to tag Mya Cordova, who was running to second. But no call was made on the tag and the throw that first allowed Melanie Haworth to score from third for the game-winning run.
Sloss struck out five Mustangs going the distance.
Garcia allowed seven hits and struck out nine batters for Stockdale.
