I often think about inspiration. What creates an initial spark? A place? A feeling? With @capitalone and @prior, this past week, it was sharing my relationship with Vienna among fellow design & curiosity seekers. Together, we immersed ourselves in culture, art, & architecture.

3 years ago, when I was seeking something foreign in design, I came to this storied city to follow that flicker. Here, I developed a new vocabulary.

I began to understand Adolf Loos’ design philosophy & his radical rejection of ornamentation. He believed that less is more. That great design was realized through simplicity, utility, & material purity. That beauty can be found in abstraction.

Unknowingly, I was seeking a similar rejection. I had just sold my Bklyn home to move into a barren historic apartment. I chose to live in that space, empty, for a year with barely any furniture or the comforts of home. I did this intentionally, to see what could be born from this void. I didn’t know why Vienna called to me then, but I’m so grateful I listened.

Adolf Loos’ clever use of geometry & materiality had quite frankly blown my mind, & I was excited to share the pioneering philosophies that inspired me. As I curated this trip, I yearned to discover a hidden gem in the city. Through some local sleuthing, I unearthed a virtually unknown apartment designed by Loos in 1913. I knew I wanted to host an evening there.

Every sensorial element in the room shaped the scenography of the evening. Our table’s geometric pattern, reflected the beautiful Loos ceiling above, while paying homage to the checkerboard floor & his clever use of mirrors in the American Bar.

Even the local food became part of the tablescape: a bed of cranberries to nestle bites upon, mounds of seasonal figs & plums, & towers of the iconic Sachertorte, all illuminated by flickering candlelight.

Then, in a nod to Loos’ love of opera, I asked my dear friend Kim to perform a few arias for our intimate group. The emotion in the room was palpable.

I could not be more honored to have clinked a glass inside this iconic home & celebrated a city that has offered me so much. #CapitalOnePartner
