M83 brought “Midnight City” to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on November 21, 2011, just weeks after the release of Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. Anthony Gonzalez and the band delivered the song with its huge synths, pulsing rhythm and instantly recognizable vocal hook, but the performance really came alive when the saxophone entered for the climactic outro. Fallon himself praised the performance immediately afterward.

“Midnight City” was already becoming one of M83’s defining songs at the time, but the Fallon performance showed how effectively its studio-sized production could translate to a live band. The sax solo in particular became a major part of the arrangement, adding an unexpected human, almost euphoric quality to an otherwise heavily electronic song. It’s a great snapshot of M83 at the moment Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming was turning the project into an international indie-electronic phenomenon.
