This boy was stressing out so bad 😭

nordeste you are amazing ❤️‍🔥

It’s a surreal moment to have @theballetsalon at the top of the Arts section of the @nytimes . Thank you to Sophie for seeing the story in us and bringing it to life. And of course @stevenmolinacontreras for coming in on a rainy day to capture the magic, love, and beauty of our dancers in rehearsal. HUGE thank you to everyone who’s donated, asked questions, showed interest, showed up, and danced with us this season. And DUH thank you to @meiying_thai for saying, “it’s already happening” when I said, “so what if we started a ballet company” ❤️

I mostly feel lucky to have dance. I can’t get out of my mind the observation that ballet is primarily an oral tradition. My mom always wanted to do ballet but only one girl in her neighborhood could afford it, so she’d teach my mom some things on the street after class. I didn’t grow up with money and the fact I got to train at all was luck. I got to experience affordable, expanding, and joyous training at @lawrenceartscenter amongst dancers/teachers I still hold dear. Many of them were dedicated to creating new spaces and opportunities for dance. It wasn’t until I left that space that I realized just how lucky I was. In many ways they were the blueprint for TBS through their words & actions.

AT THE END OF THE DAY being able to move your body is a privilege; being able to do it beautifully is a gift.

TUH.

THE ROAD TO 8.

One month out from the 2018 Mr. Olympia. Looking at these photos, I remember how much I believed in what was ahead.

A week later, I reinjured my hernia repair.

I’ll never forget tightening my weight belt during leg day and feeling a pop in my stomach. I knew something was wrong. The pain felt like a piece of mesh was stabbing me from the inside.

And I kept fighting. I had spent years working toward that moment, and I wasn’t ready to accept what was happening.

There’s a mindset you develop when you spend your life competing. You learn to function under pressure. You prepare down to the smallest detail. You hold yourself accountable long after everyone else has gone home. Previous victories give you experience. You still have to earn the next one.

That was how I approached eight.

What I struggled to accept was that I could give everything I had and still be unable to control the ending.

My plan for 2018 was tying the record with @ronniecoleman8 God had other plans.

I knew how to push. How to sacrifice. How to get up and do the work again and again. But I refused to surrender to any plan other than my own.

Could I trust Him with an outcome I would never have chosen? Could I face disappointment without letting it harden my heart?

Those questions reach far beyond a bodybuilding stage.

Somebody reading this has given years to something that hasn’t worked out the way they hoped. I know how heavy that feels. How hard it is to accept that giving everything doesn’t guarantee the ending you wanted.

My faith had to reach further than anything I could win.

And I wouldn’t change a thing.

God’s timing has been perfect, even when I couldn’t understand it. Today, I’m grateful for the pressure and for being stripped of the very thing I wanted so badly. It brought me closer to Him than I ever knew I needed to be.

I’d go through it all again to know His love and mercy the way I do today.

This is one of the best pod purchases of all time.
