The word addiction is thrown around a lot these days. It’s hard to separate the classic definition: “progressive use of a substance or behavior, despite detrimental effects to self or others” from the more modern definition/understanding (that more fully matches the underlying neuroscience):

“causes a progressive narrowing of the things that bring you pleasure.”

….but the same circuitry underlies both definitions. No matter the language one uses to describe it.

And there are healthy and unhealthy addictions. What’s the difference?

Healthy “addictions” tend to be ones that don’t limit pleasure for other things and wellbeing overall. They are benevolent.

The opposite of addiction, in my opinion, has at least something to do with the progressive expansion of the things that bring you pleasure. Enlightenment is a complicated and squishy term. It’s not a scientific term. It’s not operationally defined. But I think we all sort of intuitively know what it means.

If you would like to add or edit anything to what is in this post, please do. It’s more about stimulating thought and discussion around these issues than planting a flag.

I’m genuinely curious what people feel compelled to do —-healthy or unhealthy, these days.

Meanwhile, consider where your biology might’ve been hijacked, how to take control of it through conscious awareness, and above all, I do hope everyone will think about ways to expand their experience of healthy delight(s) in daily life.

Several upcoming episodes of the Huberman lab podcast deal specifically with these issues at the mechanistic and actionable level.

And as always, thank you for your interest in science!
