I didn’t have a passport until I was 21.

I didn’t know how to check a bag or what turbulence felt like or how to navigate public transportation. I didn’t even know how to use a key fob (Thank you to the kind young woman who demonstrated how to do this so I could have dinner in the dorm on my first night in Newcastle).

On nights when my dorm mates and I went into town for drinks and someone asked, “How are you going, Laura?” I proudly replied with, “The bus and then the train!” because I’d figured out how to use those by then and had no idea that was actually an inquiry into my well-being.

Nearly 20 years later I finally got to return to Australia. I no longer have a Discman or a film camera or an actual physical map, but the country is just as lovely and friendly as before. 🐨 🦘🇦🇺 🍻
