McDonald’s is embracing an unexpected truth: it might not be for your first date, but it’s for every date after that. Its “Not for First Dates” campaign turns the pressure of first impressions into a celebration of the everyday moments that actually build relationships. Through films and striking visuals, the campaign captures couples at different stages of love—from new relationships to families and couples who have spent years together. Instead of trying to make McDonald’s look like a fancy first-date destination, the brand owns its role as the comfortable place where people can simply be themselves. I’ve shared a lot about why I love travelling alone and a few of you asked about the downsides or have never dared to do it. So yes, there are some. Some are practical, some are uncomfortable, and some are probably exactly why solo travel teaches you so much. After many, many solo trips over the last 10 years, here’s something I’ve never really shared before: the less glamorous side of solo travel. Can you relate to any of these? First one here: having to take timer mode selfies 🫠 It’s more expensive. No one to split the hotel, taxi, rental car or random extra costs with. There’s no way around it: travelling alone often just costs (a lot) more. (Generally travelling with me is expensive tbf though and if you move your family but there’s a lot of them, you spend a lot of money on postcards 🤣) If something goes wrong, you’re tired, lost, disappointed or just having a bad day, there’s no one there to take over for a minute. You have to sort it out yourself. That can feel hard. It can also be a very good reminder that you can. And the long term effects of that remain! Eating alone has its downsides. I am the kind of person who wants to order half the menu and try everything - but there’s nobody there to share it with. Upside though: nobody steals your food. The last Rolo is always yours 😬 The uncomfortable feeling of learning to enjoy beautiful moments just with yourself. You see something incredible and your first instinct might be to grab your phone and send someone a picture. Because somehow it feels like a beautiful moment becomes more real when someone else sees it too. And then you learn to just… see it. To enjoy something beautiful without needing to immediately share it with anyone else. People notice you. And oftentimes, they stare. And talk. Especially in places where everyone else seems to be in couples or groups. You’ll get looks. Sometimes curious, sometimes surprised, sometimes you hear a whispered conversation and they might even ask you if/why you’re alone. At some point you stop wondering what they’re thinking. And then there are the looks you give yourself. Is it weird that I enjoy being alone? Does it say something
