I’m incredibly grateful that Compact Disco has become a place where so many incredible DJs want to play. But I’m even more grateful for the crowd we’ve built, because somewhere along the way, something wonderful happened. People stopped coming for the name on the flyer and started coming because they trusted the party. They know they’re going to have a good time, regardless of who’s behind the decks. And to me, that’s about as good as it gets in this business. We’ve had everyone from Doc Martin to Radio Slave to The Crystal Method, but those artists weren’t booked because of their names. They were booked because they belong in that room. Every DJ I book is someone whose music I know, whose abilities I respect, and who I believe will give our crowd something special. I couldn’t care less how many Instagram followers they have. Sometimes we don’t even announce who’s playing, and those nights can turn out to be absolute magic. This morning an agent was aggressively pushing a rather famous DJ on me, offering to have him play for free because he happened to playing in SF next Friday and they’re personally requested to play at my spot on Saturday. I’m honored, I truly am. The problem is, I already have someone booked who’s been playing for me for three years. And I’m not about to push aside someone who’s helped build this place just because somebody with a bigger name wants to drop in. Had the artist been right for the room, I might have asked my resident if he’d like to share the decks. That’s how you treat people. I understand that bigger clubs / bigger parties have to operate differently, and maybe chasing famous names would bring us more attention. But I’ve spent over thirty years in this business learning that attention and respect are two very different things. There’s a certain grace to doing things properly, to knowing your room, respecting your artists, and trusting your audience. I’m not interested in sacrificing any of that for a little publicity. We’ve built something special in that little room by the sea, and I intend to keep it that way. The party comes first. The people come first. The music comes first.
