three months ago, I was in an accident that turned my world upside down. literally. the uber I was in rolled over on the expressway and in that moment, I thought I was going to die. although i walked away with minimal physical injuries, the mental battle was just beginning. I didn’t trust my body anymore and I moved through life with fear. so I didn’t run for five weeks, which isn’t exactly ideal in the middle of a marathon training cycle. I started questioning whether I should even run this marathon. maybe i should just defer it again but I tried my best to give myself grace, take things one day at a time and slowly build my mileage back up. I also shifted my focus from chasing a time goal to making my 10th marathon a celebration of life. but the marathon will always remind you to respect the distance. I started off feeling strong, but as the pain kicked in, so did the flashbacks and self-doubt. My mind went back to the moment in the last slide. I decided to focus on making it to the cheer stations and drawing energy from the people I saw along the course. I kept reminding myself that even though i’m still not 100% after the accident, I am strong, capable and safe.
