I rarely post anything without some degree of planning, but today marks a special occasion and i’m feeling v inspired... Because this morning I met with a woman whose tenacity should honestly be studied. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever come across before and if you keep reading and you’ll understand why. Her name is Cat Hart @cat_hart_maternity - and i’ve followed her journey on instagram over the past 6 months, but now that I’ve been lucky enough to meet her in person I can confidently say she is the bravest person i’ve ever met. Last year, after having her baby, Cat developed postpartum psychosis, but she was turned away by medical professional after medical professional, each telling her some version of “you’re fine” or “this is normal after a baby”. She was not fine. she had a severe, debilitating illness, and instead of getting the care she deserved, she was sent home. she ran into the street and was hit by a bus and by some miracle she survived (praying to the miracle workers here), but she spent 7 long months in hospital learning to live with life-changing injuries that never should have happened. and yet this morning she sat beside me, a total stranger, in a london café and told me her story with courage and grace. Surprisingly trauma can do that. Go and follow her… not just because she’s inspiring, but because she tells her story far better than i ever could. i’m not sure the words exist in my vocabulary to honour her journey or do it justice. She is an extremely impressive woman, and it’s rare to connect with someone so deeply, swapping stories knowing you can make a real difference to each other’s lives. I wanted to understand how she found the strength to share her story whilst living through it, making an enormous difference to birthing parents, medics, PPP sufferers and charities while still being so vulnerable herself. People who’ve been through something devastating often find solace in helping others. but honestly, I think she’s just a unicorn. it took me a long time to get to a place where i could put other people first. Cat has been fighting for the health of future mothers from day one, and sharing something this raw online is not👇🏼
