Left a career I worked hard for to figure out something completely new. Scary, but worth it. ❤️
There’s so much Kona spam to come so let’s not milk this recap; 🏊‍♀️ horrendous swim 0/10. Lost my goggles right before the start and made a new friend, Jess, who kindly gave me her spare! Forgot my pre-swim and some bike nutrition in my white bag so was also running around with an army of volunteers who were all amazing and found it for me. The actual swim was so swelly. I knew it was going to be a slow day and I’m proud of the time I did considering. Was not a fan of getting pushed by a yellow cap man from wave after. The whole swim was a mental and physical battle that I eventually overcame because I didn’t come this far to falter at the first hurdle. 🚴‍♀️ Anyone that says the bike course is boring is lying though. Some of the most stunning scenes in sections and I had so much fun on the rolling hills and was anticipating a 5 hour split until the headwind took that dream away💀 I listened to coach and kept my HR steady to save some for the run. Still buzzing with 71st female bike including the pros 🥹 🏃🏼‍♀️ Hot and humid. Best words to describe it. I was managing okay in the first 10km and the vibes in Kona/up Palani were impeccable👌🏼 But then turning left onto the Queen K is where it got hard. The sun came out and was just scorching the left side of my face for miles. I didn’t find the energy lab much hotter than the test of the course. Every aid stations I was slamming the ice and coke. Again, kept my pace and heart rate controlled and had a strong finish. A really tough but rewarding day out. I can put Kona behind me for now and focus on what’s next because we aren’t done yet 👀

We are home from the hospital... and it’s taken me a few days to gather my thoughts.  To start, Soraya is a ROCKSTAR. Since surgery there’s been an immediate change. Taking out the 3+ hours a day of struggling on the toilet truly has been a LIFE CHANGER. She now spends that time coloring and talking and seems SO much happier ❤️ I have to say… the month leading up to her surgery I kept thinking- no, FEARING- the surgery. I worried she was making the wrong decision. Now I know she truly does know what she needs, even as a child. I’m so incredibly humbled by her. She put herself through surgery, pain, and 11 days in the hospital… and it was worth it! The learning curve has been STEEP for Safi and me. We had no idea that with Soraya being on a BiPAP ventilator at night, her ostomy bag would fill up with air and need to be “burped” every couple of hours. This is on top of our new routine of doing suprapubic catheter care. It’s been awhile since we have had to be up every 2-3 hoursat night... and we’re having flashbacks from some darker times. The first 3 years of Soraya’s life we were up every 3 hours for g-tube feeds. We have orders for more nurse hours to be approved... but it takes time. In the meantime, we are taking turns in Soraya’s room to do her care. For the first time in years I’m doubting myself- can we do this care? But then I see Soraya’s strength and her happiness when opening a welcome box of ostomy products from @hollister_incorporated… and I know she did the hardest thing and Safi and I CAN DO THIS!!!!!!! As we learn we’re working on organizing the house with all the new medical supplies, Yasmeen and Leena are navigating their own comfort levels with bodily fluids (all feelings are valid), and I’m keeping up with my lectures/advocacy commitments! Our highlight this week was spending time with L and Y at the 10th Annual Sibling Symposium hosted by @siblingswithamission. There’s a lot to process and a new routine to establish... and about 30 more hours of nursing to cover. One day at a time- but let’s go back to the beginning of the post. SORAYA’S SO HAPPY!!!! Ostomy and SPC life here we go! 🎉
