“That’s my mom!” my 12-year-old son shouted as I walked across the stage at my convocation. After everything it had taken to get there, hearing him say those words brought me to tears. I was 21 when I got married in an arranged marriage, and soon after, we moved to the UK. Everything seemed happy at first, and I had no idea what lay ahead. I became a mother at 22, but soon, my marriage turned abusive. My husband cheated on me and physically assaulted me multiple times, while my in-laws made fun of everything I did. Hair colour karaya toh mazaak, kapde pehne toh mazaak. Even my skin colour and the way I walked became a joke. Eventually, my husband left. My son was 5, and my daughter was just one and a half. With no degree and two children to raise in the UK, I started working as a freelance makeup artist. I battled depression while trying to keep my family together, while my parents eventually moved countries to live closer to me. I knew I had to rebuild my life on my own terms. I was always curious about skin and how treatments worked. After my separation, I took courses, but I wanted to learn more about skincare, so in 2024, I joined a university. For three years, I juggled work, my business, studies and motherhood. I went from scoring in the 60s to achieving 90% in an assessment. There were sacrifices, too. My daughter would ask, “Mumma, everyone's parents come to school events, why don't you?” It broke my heart, but I kept going. On graduation day, I took my children out of school because I wanted them to see me walk that stage. My mother took a day off work too to celebrate the day with me. The moment my son shouted, ‘That’s my mom!’ I felt I had made it. The tears couldn’t stop flowing. My eight-year-old daughter now dreams of her own convocation. “Mumma, you have to come, wear a nice dress, and scream for me!” she said. I promised I'd scream my lungs out. Today, I have my degree, my own beauty studio, and two children who have seen me figure things out one day at a time. I remember wondering how I would raise them and build a life for us. And today, I can finally look back and say, ‘I did it. I found a way to make everything work.'"
How did she do this?!? 🤣 #reels #family #jamaica
This one was special! @jerseymikesuk_ You’ve allowed me tick off things on my bucket list that I never knew were attainable. From the PJ, helicopter ride, meeting Peter Cancro, a suite at MSG, tried the best sub I’ve ever had & I gotta experience it with a great bunch of people 💙 What a life!
