I loved being a fashion photographer. I really loved it.

The creativity, working with other creative people, creating beautiful images, art, travelling the world, seeing new places and meeting new people. It was my passion. My choice. My grown-up job.

I loved modelling too, at some point, although never in the same way. Modelling sort of happened to me at a time when I needed to escape. Suddenly I was travelling, feeling free, discovering the world and myself. And I was pretty good at it.

Did I actually enjoy being a model? Hmm. Not really. 😂 A little. Sometimes.

Photography was different. Photography was something I chose.

And now, through some very conscious life choices, a few coincidences, a big miracle and some strange twists of fate, I seem to have become all of these things at once.

I’m still a photographer, an image maker, a storyteller through images. I still love photographing other women, although I do it far too little. These days I photograph myself more often. Mostly because I’m always available. 😂 It’s easier, faster and conveniently cheaper.

So somehow I’ve become my own model too.

I certainly didn’t see that coming when I started AndBloom in 2018, simply photographing portraits of women.

And then there is writing.

Writing was always there. As a child I filled pages with stories and I remember a teacher telling me, “Dee, I think you’re going to be a writer when you grow up.”

I didn’t become a writer. Not really. But I love writing. I actually find it much easier to express myself in words on a page than by speaking them out loud.

And I am absolutely certain that becoming a mother gave me the strength to really follow my heart.

And somehow, over these past few years, all those seemingly separate pieces have started falling into place.

The model. The photographer. The image maker. The storyteller.

Maybe that’s what getting older is partly about?
