a year agoLoved this book. I’m so anti marriage yet love MoR. The other reason for a contemporary MoR really works in the US - for health insurance. There’s some fantastic books (Just Go with it by Maddison Wright, Friends with Benefits by Marissa Kanter, Would You Rather by Allison Ashley) inc one that involves a marriage pact (When We’re Thirty by Casey Dembowski). Also to access married student housing which is better (The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren though that one is more the prologue and I Tenporarily Do by Ellie Cahill oh and the hilarious historical romantasty rom com which you mentioned in the podcast -India Hilton’s Geographers Map to Romance which she dubbed ‘marriage of inconvenience’). Way back in the day when I was on uni exchange in the Us we were all under the belief that to declare yourselves independent so your parents income wouldn’t hurt applications for student loans or funding (it eas counted til you were 25) was to marry. I shad classmates plan to do this (I left before it happened to know if it worked). Also, coz I think about this a LOT. Marriage was designed for convenience (for men) so why is marrying for a visa fraud?!!! Marriage was always a business transaction for men to gain more land, so gaining a visa is kinda an equivalent of that.
