Neighbors, an Albuquerque man is facing charges after police say he was driving drunk when he fatally struck a 61-year-old woman and fled the scene.
—————————
33-year-old Demetrius Thomas have been charged with DWI-related vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. Police said the woman, who appeared to be living on the streets, was killed after being struck by Thomas’ SUV.
—————————
According to the criminal complaint, Thomas initially left the crash scene and returned only after his parents urged him to turn himself in. Thomas’ father told police that his son called and said he had been involved in a crash and wanted to be picked up from his apartment. His father told him, “You hit somebody. You don’t know if they’re hurt or not, you gotta go back over there.”
—————————
Police said Thomas eventually returned to the scene. His father was there and flagged down officers, reportedly telling them, “He’s the one who (expletive) did it,” while pointing toward Thomas’ SUV. Officers also reported noticing signs that Thomas may have been intoxicated.
—————————
Thomas told investigators that the woman “ran out in front of me and I didn’t want to stop,” according to the complaint. He said he attempted to brake before hitting her but drove home afterward because he was scared. The case remains pending, and the allegations against Thomas have not been proven in court. Thoughts?
