Architects and flooring installers lay end-grain wood block floors—composed of vertical wood cross-sections soaked in natural oils and resins—across industrial facilities and historic European buildings. While covering a high-traffic floor with end-grain wooden pavers looks like an exotic, indestructible design choice that should dominate modern residential construction, this historic flooring style remains rare in American homes due to high installation labor costs and extreme sensitivity to seasonal humidity swings. The mechanism relies on vertical fiber orientation, oil polymer saturation, and subfloor expansion dynamics. Positioning wood blocks so the growth rings face upward exposes the dense vertical end-grain, which absorbs immense compressive weight without splintering and readily drinks in protective linseed or tung oil finishes. However, because wood expands and contracts radially and tangentially much more across its width than along its vertical grain, unmanaged indoor humidity changes cause these solid block arrays to buckle, cup, or shear apart unless installed over expensive, highly specialized flexible sub-membrane systems. #engineering #woodworking #architecture #construction #flooring

If these steps could talk to my future about my past, you’d swear they were talking about two completely different people. The residue of million-dollar dreams, plots, and schemes still remains on these steps. So do the conversations I had with myself about making it out. Only a few make it out of this city. I’m blessed to be among them. Grateful I survived long enough to become somebody the younger me wouldn’t believe. But it’s bigger than making it out now. It’s about showing there’s a whole new avenue that others can follow. Big Homie Trap🏚️⚖️🖤
