The story of Maçakızı is inseparable from the story of Bodrum itself, and from the remarkable woman who helped shape its cultural life.

In 1977, Ayla Emiroğlu opened a small pension in Bodrum, welcoming artists, writers, travellers and friends into a world defined by warmth, independence and an entirely personal approach to hospitality. As Maçakızı moved from one address to another, its guests followed. What began as an intimate gathering place would become one of the Mediterranean’s most celebrated destinations, without losing the spirit of the woman who created it.

Known affectionately as the Queen of Spades, Ayla Hanım belonged to a generation that helped make Bodrum a haven for creativity, friendship and freedom.

Through photographs from the family archive, her own words and memories of the early Maçakızı, 74CULTURE and 74ESCAPE pay tribute to an extraordinary woman whose legacy reaches far beyond the hotel she founded.

With love and gratitude, we remember Ayla Emiroğlu.

Att ha fått en liten mini me som jag nu kan sitta på restaurang med och ha riktiga konversationer 🤍

if you know me, you would know that i've never been an overly spiritual guy. quite the opposite for the most part. but these days i wake up pinching myself on the reg. there was never any world where our love would make sense pursuing to be honest. we had briefly dated many years ago, sure, but since then we had created very different paths for ourselves. we dated and married other people, had very different careers and lived an entire country apart. nothing was in our favor. yet somehow we still found each other again and fell in love harder than either of us could have ever imagined. like it was always there, waiting for us. i still don't understand it and i don't even care to. but something this perfect can only be explained as divine intervention.

brianna, you are the best thing to ever happen to me. you are my best friend, my lover, my daily inspiration and my beacon of light. i try everyday to be a better man and partner to you. for you. today is my favorite day of the year simply because it marks the day that you were put on this earth.

happy birthday @briannawiest ... i love you with all that i am. in every lifetime. ❤️‍🔥
