A boy, a lifeboat, and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, adrift together on an ocean that looks like the inside of God's imagination. Lee's imagery remains unmatched: the ocean mirroring the stars until sea and sky dissolve into one, the whale breaching through bioluminescence, the carnivorous island teeming with meerkats, every frame earning the Best Director Oscar and redefining what visual storytelling could do. But the film's true power detonates in its final minutes, when an older Pi, played by Irrfan Khan, offers insurance investigators a second version of his survival, stripped of animals and mercy, and asks the question that has haunted viewers ever since: which story do you prefer?
