You have more than likely heard of Aphex Twin before, but if not, then this one shouldn't be slept on. Selected Ambient Works 85–92 by Aphex Twin still sounds ahead of its time, more than 30 years after its release. This is a great way to start listening to his work, but I recommend going beyond it and into his other releases (in chronological order). For the best experience, listen with headphones.

Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works 85–92 (1992)

The Artist:
Aphex Twin is the alias of Richard D. James, an Irish-born, UK-based producer who has been pushing the boundaries of electronic music since the late 80s. He’s a cult figure known for everything from lush ambient tracks to chaotic, brain-melting breakbeats drawing on many styles, including techno, ambient, acid, and jungle.
What sets him apart isn’t just his technical skill but his entire brand, which has come to be known for mind-bending music, horror music videos, and an overall cheeky approach to the music industry. His influence and appeal stretches across genres, generations, and continents, and his work continues to inspire producers, DJs, and fans alike.

The Record:
Selected Ambient Works 85–92 is Aphex Twin at his most dreamy and melodic. These tracks weren’t made for clubs. They’re more like sonic journeys; dusty, raw, and otherworldly. There’s a warmth to the synths, a weird nostalgia in the drum programming. It’s ambient, but not in a passive sense. The rhythms are there, and the textures are gritty, but the energy is calm, reflective, and personal.
Listening to this album feels like floating through a parallel universe where humans are the aliens being discovered by another race, and this is the music the discoverers hear. It’s the kind of record that reveals more each time you come back to it.

Yours musically,
Aldeen ( @sygerian )

P.S. Personal favorites: “Heliosphan”, “Green Calx”, "We Are the Music Makers”
