![๐จ๐ฆ๐บ๐ธ The rhetoric coming from Washington toward Canada escalated again Tuesday, this time with an explicit warning tied to the U.S. midterm elections.
CBC reports that Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro told Canadian lobbyists in Washington to โget the hell out of our country,โ then warned: โIf you interfere in our elections in Maine or Michigan you will pay even more dearly.โ
Navarro did not explain what he meant by Canadian โinterference.โ
Canada has long lobbied American politicians, labour groups and businesses on cross-border issues, including during negotiations for CUSMA. Canadian provinces currently have representatives in Washington advocating for their interests as the trade dispute continues.
The political complication is that Trumpโs tariffs on Canada are themselves becoming issues in U.S. elections. CBC reports that trade with Canada has become part of Senate races in Michigan and Maine, where politicians are debating the economic consequences of the administrationโs policies.
Navarroโs comments also came the same day new U.S. bans on selected Canadian products took effect. Trump says he expects Canada to return to negotiations and apologize. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc responded that Canada will not apologize for โstanding up for Canadian workers, Canadian businesses [and] defending our economy.โ
CBCโs reporting is particularly valuable here because Canadians need to be able to distinguish between legitimate diplomatic advocacy, domestic U.S. political debate and actual foreign election interference. Those are not automatically the same thing, and Navarro did not provide evidence in this interview that Canada is interfering in the midterms.
Canada and the United States are deeply integrated economically, but they remain two sovereign democracies with their own political systems.
So where should the line be drawn between normal Canadian advocacy in Washington and inappropriate involvement in U.S. politics?
And when a senior White House adviser warns that Canada will โpay even more dearly,โ what should Canadians expect their government to seek clarification on before trade negotiations move forward?](https://s12.imginn.com/828597887_17930962821406556_975439070234752795_n.jpg?t51.82787-15/828597887_17930962821406556_975439070234752795_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_p480x480_tt6&_nc_cat=100&ig_cache_key=Mzk5NzExODMwNjc3NTIwNjA2OA%3D%3D.3-ccb7-5&ccb=7-5&_nc_sid=58cdad&efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6IkZFRUQueHBpZHMuNzIwLnNkci5yZWd1bGFyX3Bob3RvLkMzIn0%3D&_nc_ohc=H_6abFAfzZ8Q7kNvwEV1tbM&_nc_oc=AdqrnwZ80z56kQ2yB7sXMiJFNToZcRtUw5vfGdfWKYz0BoDh6FPcQ1F4_t29dO6_MT50nb3_6HVJ8xguqXcfh91B&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com&_nc_gid=igrgjiIIS9zKx3XSi9G_IA&_nc_ss=70689&oh=00_AQPeCkI0KlJ1A8xWXsDsid0V9Z_CBOa_khwlSASC05laSA&oe=6AC6B671)
