The festival takes place on 1 and 2 November, but events from Mexico to Peru have been taking place already, including some stunning Catrina and Catrin at this year's F1 Grand Prix in Mexico City. Day of the Dead's origins lie with the Aztecs, an indigenous group of people who lived in the area that would become Mexico City, around 2,000 years ago. The Aztecs worshipped many gods and goddesses, including Mictēcacihuātl - a goddess of death and ruler of the Aztec underworld - Chicunamictlan. They believed that when a person died they made the journey to the depths of Chicunamictlan. Aztec people left offerings on altars, or ofrendas, that would help their dead relatives on their journey to the afterlife.
