Crazy story incoming. It’s worth it!
Time flies. 29 years go by and all the sudden we’re taking the next generation to see Metallica. They were my first concert. 1996. 8th grade. We arrived early. Dad sat in the stands. Jeremy and I camped a spot in the front row.
We were babies. Navigating a metal crowd. My first time smelling weed. I was taking drum lessons and wanted a drum stick so bad. I was trying to send telepathy to Lars. I never sweat like that before. I remember drinking a Snapple in a single breath when we got back to the car. My chest was bruised from being crushed into the barrier. Major rite of passage.
I went to my first rave the next year, and my musical interests stuck with electronic music. But Metallica will always hold special place in my heart. Ten years old. 1991. One of the most incredible years for music and movies. Deep nostalgia. Riding in the back of the family Suburban down HWY-5 on a road trip to Disneyland. No seatbelts. Rolling around in a blanket fort. Listening to the Black Album on repeat on a Walkman.
The music defined me and my relationships. Including with my lifelong best mate
@jtbaumsquad who just took his son to his first Metallica concert. He gifted me a ticket to join for my birthday.
I’ve been reminiscing since the show. Change, the new generation, etc. I started to wonder about that first concert, and I found a full-length bootleg on YouTube! Incredible. I tried to remember where we were, but it was a lifetime ago. I gave up, but then I saw someone’s comment saying he found himself. I tried again. The lights are on at the start, and the camera pans to Lars coming out. There I am. With my butt cut. Next to Jeremy. Pushed up against the guard rail. Just as I remembered. I wasn’t making this shit up! But I still can’t believe it.
It’s such a weird feeling to see yourself so young. On a stranger’s VHS tape from 29 years ago. From such a pivotal moment in your life. Juxtaposed against the high def footage from my iPhone. It’s a serious Back to the Future moment. But it’s me. Truly bizarre. Truly radical.
We decided we won’t miss another show when they come through. Maybe I’ll get to take my kids one day 🙏🏻🤘🏻
