On this day, 29 October 1948, a massacre by the Israeli army took place in the Palestinian village of Al-Dawayima killing hundreds of people (content note: physical and sexual violence). One Israeli soldier, S Kaplan, wrote a letter to a newspaper describing what happened: “There was no battle and no resistance (and no Egyptians). The first conquerors killed from 80 to 100 [male] Arabs, women and children. They killed the children by smashing their skulls with sticks. There was not a home without its dead... Arab men and women who remained in the village were shut into houses without food or water. Then came sappers to blow up houses. One commander ordered a sapper to put two old Arab women into the particular house that was going to be blown up with them inside. The sapper refused, saying he took orders only from his commander. So the commander ordered his soldiers to shut the women in, and the horror was perpetrated. One soldier boasted that he had raped an Arab woman and then shot her. Another Arab woman who was carrying a newborn baby was made to clean the courtyard, where the soldiers eat. She did that service for a day or two, and in the end she and her baby were shot.” The newspaper did not publish the letter. Around 60 people were murdered in the local mosque, most of them elders, and 85 people who sought refuge in the nearby cave of Iraq al-Zagh were also murdered there – including women and children. Estimates of casualties range from 200 up to 500-1000, according to the US consul. After the massacre, the surviving residents of the village, which previously numbered around 3700, fled as refugees in the West Bank and Jordan. A few years after the massacre, the Israeli village of Amatzya was established over a portion of the ruins of al-Dawayima. These past weeks I have this feeling that the ‘the end is near’ ghost has grown in strength in people’s mind. I feel the fear growing. In myself too although it is mostly surrounded by a deep calmness. There is a part of me that wants to start having some food set aside for tough times or wondering what can be done to be prepared but it’s always the same thing: be prepared for what exactly? What will happen? Where will it give first? We can’t know that! There are so many variables! The ship is sinking from all sides! So what I actually do to prepare is this: - I take care of myself. The best way to be ready for whatever comes is to be as healthy and grounded as possible. Fear will eat your body from within, don’t let it settle, acknowledge it, listen to it but don’t let it take the mic and take the wheel, it’s a drunken driver. - I meditate. We live in an attention economy which means that the most precious resource you have is your attention. Spoiler alert it is your most precious resource even outside of an attention economy, this is what most spirituality points at. Other people feed on it each time you take your phone or give your attention away. Reclaim it. Don’t let the internet grow seeds in your brain, reclaim your sovereignty, a lot of hateful stories are being broadly fed to us right now. Take some distance, listen to all sides, there is truth in any narrative but it doesn’t mean the narrative is the truth. Meditation has so many more benefits but I can’t write a book here. - I enjoy my life and feel gratitude for the little things so I don’t take them for granted. They might disappear, it will be mostly okay. - I embrace change: the seasons, my cycle, astrology (I know! I must be stupid! Spoiler alert: I’m not), whatever makes me aware of the subtle movements that never end. Everything is already changing everyday. Make peace with it. - I find ground I can feel and rest upon. By that I mean spiritual ground, you don’t need to be spiritual. Your family values can be your ground. Your ground is something that gives you meaning and peace. My current ground is that I have chosen to incarnate now and I’m here for it.
