Sydney, framed with intention. 🇦🇺 Last Saturday before my last concert at @sydneyoperahouse, I decided to exercise my free will and practice my photography. I set out to work on technique: Negative space. I think it is one of the fundamental techniques that does not come as natural to me as the others, one that I tend to neglect if I just click away at the shutter. In no way have I perfected the technique, but as I pay more attention to it it’ll naturally improve as long as I’m willing to get out and take photos. 📸 What are some technical aspects you’d like to work on in your own photography? Feel free to let me know in the comments 💭 • 📷 @fujifilmx_au XT-5 XF33mmF1.4 R LM WR 💻 @lightroom #madewithlightroom #fujifilm #feelnewsydney #myfujifilmlegacy explorepage
My beautiful mom would’ve turned 80 years old today. It’s been just over 2 years since she left her body. I miss her (and my dad) so much. Hug your people tight and love on one another. I was going to add the song by Queen, ‘You’re my best friend’ to this post, but I didn’t want it to omit the audio of her that you can hear in the one video I included. She often sang songs to me, and we often sang together, off-key, usually fighting back tears. I always want to remember her singing that Queen song to me, with me. 🥹 Boy oh boy did she love singing along with Freddie Mercury. That reminds me of one Thanksgiving, many years ago, after I’d moved out of our family home, when I brought some friends and a boyfriend home for dinner, and once everyone had taken a seat at the table, she took out a little tape player boom box and played ‘teach your children well’ by Crosby Stills, Nash and Young, and got down on the floor next to my chair on her knees, and sang loudly while holding my hands, staring into my eyes. I BAWLED my eyes out at the table. 😭At the time I was mad that she did that, because she knew I would cry and ruin my makeup. Oh how I’d love to have her sing to me now! 💔 Speaking of my mom and music, one music-centric gift that my mom and dad gave Ian- the gift of piano lessons- has been the gift that keeps on giving. They would be SO PROUD of him and so overjoyed to hear him play. He plays for hours a day, usually from my dad’s old music books, often serenading me to sleep. I am so fortunate. 🎵🎹🎼
This week the pendulum has swung from big work days to big moments of fun. I had a decade of denying myself of fun. It didn’t feel safe. I assumed that if I slipped off my path of discipline my whole world would fall apart. OCD took over parts of my life which made it hard to let go. But in my mid forties I’m allowing myself some fun. I still have a twinge of worry here and there but it feels a lot more balanced now. The self optimisation chat I often hear seems to be based purely on the aim of becoming the perfect, flawless optimised human who never veers off the track of self improvement. Sounds fucking boring to me. I also believe that we learn and grow the most after messy, challenging parts of life, not the ones where we are militant in how we live. Here’s to letting the messy bits of you free.
I’ve been thinking so much on all the things my mom has taught me throughout my life. Not just in what she’s said, but in the way she’s lived and the example she’s always been for me. To lead with kindness. To give people grace. To be strong without losing your softness. To keep your heart open, even when life doesn’t go quite the way you imagined. My mom has always been my biggest cheerleader. The one who believed in me before I even knew what was possible for myself. Who encouraged me to dream big, to keep going, and most importantly, to never lose sight of who I am along the way. And now, all these years and so many chapters of life later, I get to dedicate a dance to her this Tuesday. 🥹❤️ There’s something so beautiful and full circle about getting to honor the woman who first encouraged my love of dance, through the very thing she helped me fall in love with. As life goes on, the more I realize that some of the greatest gifts our parents give us aren’t things at all. They’re the values we carry, the love we pass on, and the way we choose to show up in this world. And I hope more than anything that I make her proud! Not necessarily through what i do in life, but in the person I am and the way I move through life. Love you so much mom!! This one’s for you❤️
