In the schools of Azerbaijan, wearing a headscarf is now prohibited. I think this is a good thing.

As young girls in Iran, we unfortunately had no choice. The ayatollahs forced us to cover ourselves, supposedly to prevent men from being tempted by us. In this way, we were reduced to our sex and officially treated as second-class citizens. Despite being in no way inferior to boys in intelligence or ability, certain people regarded us as nothing more than breeding machines.

When I lived in Iran, my dream was to one day take off my headscarf and dress freely as a woman. I no longer wanted to be invisible behind ideologically imposed Islamic clothing. I wanted to be much more than my sex: I wanted to be a successful human being, not someone who had to cover herself to protect men from their own lustful looks.

Fortunately, Iranians have always resisted this oppression. But this is what the Islamists wanted to impose on us. Those who refused risked being flogged by the morality police.

It is shameful that, in the West today, such a degrading concept, which requires women to cover themselves, is being defended and even presented as a form of emancipation.

Let a child be a child. No girl should have to grow up believing that she must cover herself to deserve respect. Yet this is precisely what is taught within Muslim communities: if you do not cover yourself, you become an object of male lust and lose the respect of your community.

In Western schools, we must fight for gender equality and prohibit all forms of discrimination against women.

The photo below shows me with my classmates when I was 17. Every one of them was a bright girl, chained to the hijab.

We worked hard to free ourselves. Yet some of us ultimately fell victim to the ayatollahs.

Does the West truly want to help girls growing up in Islamic communities, or does it want to abandon them?

Let people enjoy equality and freedom instead of allowing them to be discriminated against by dogmatic religious beliefs and the social pressure of their communities. That is my choice.

We live in the West. Let our Western values prevail. #freefromhijab

I love to see the good guys win. 🤌🏼

On Tuesday Ryan hosted an incredibly chic lunch at one of our all time favourite restaurants - Petersham nurseries, in Richmond - to celebrate WRITING.

The occasion marked the publication of his 52nd ‘ letter to Leo ‘ which is an important series that he launched last year where he writes a letter to our son every week. It’s a fascinating read (especially from a mother’s perspective) to deep dive into the brain of a masculine man navigating fatherhood in an ever changing modern world.

He co-hosted the lunch with the absolutely luminous children’s author Rachel bright… whom we’ve both fought over for many years.

(I must have read the camel who had the hump 100+ times over the paat 5 years because it puts me in an incomparably joyful mood, especially when I read out the words yooooo hooooo rise and shine in a funny voice) … cuthbert being in a grump is very relatable and very good for having a subtle discussion with your child about how unacceptable tantrums are 😂

She is such a brilliant writer but also such an incredibly mentor for Ryan as they share so many values.

RL - I’m always so proud of what you achieve especially because everything you do so authentic and intentional … no one can ever rush you or steer you off course. You can’t act, you won’t pretend, and you certainly won’t put on a mask.

Probably why this felt like such a dream pairing. It screamed of authenticity.

Sadly we live in a world where everything is moving towards the unification of personalities, concepts, identities - and also a total lack of creativity (we’re basically living through machines) and becoming exceptionally lazy, but strangely efficient at the same time.

Ryan is someone who celebrates doing things in his own way in his own time (he hates to be told what to do) so is probably a ‘true creative’. The day I learnt to accept that, the day i realised we were gonna stay togehrrr forever. ♾️

Tuesday was a real celebration of slowness, analog living, nostalgia, and an opportunity to share incredibly inspiring stories about the ‘right thing happening at just the right time’ and trusting the process…. Believing in the magic of life and
