Barbera Thornhill is the new face of America’s fight against human trafficking, and her welcome post has already been viewed more than 10 million times. Assistant Secretary of State Riley Barnes introduced her on Tuesday as the new Ambassador at Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. President Trump nominated Thornhill in May, and the Senate confirmed her 51 to 47 in August. She’s a Los Angeles business executive and philanthropist who says she worked with Mother Teresa in India in the 1990s, and Trump previously nominated her as ambassador to Singapore in 2019 before that nomination was withdrawn in 2021. Her office leads the State Department’s anti-trafficking work and publishes the annual Trafficking in Persons Report, which holds governments around the world accountable for how they handle the issue. Advocacy group PACT raised concerns during her nomination that she lacks significant experience in federal anti-trafficking policy, while Thornhill has said she plans to treat survivors as partners in shaping policy.
