For nearly 2 years, the Trump administration and Russ Vought have relied on propaganda like this to enable an unprecedented destruction of scientific research. Thousands of federally funded research grants have been terminated or frozen, tens of thousands of scientists and research personnel have left federal agencies, billions of dollars in cuts to research agencies have been proposed, and efforts have been made to give political appointees final authority over federal research funding. But tomorrow’s election could change this trajectory. A shift in the congressional majority could give Congress the power to protect science agencies and research funding, permanently block the OMB proposal that would give political appointees oversight over federal funding, ensure allocated funds are spent, and hold the administration accountable for its attacks on scientific research.
