Here are the results of my latest round of material tests, in which I’ve been experimenting with molybdenum, volcanic sand, carborundum, titanium siliconite, peridot, lapis lazuli and red garnet, mixing each of them into a stoneware clay body before throwing a series of small bowls.

Once glazed with a feldspathic crackle glaze, the bowls were reduction fired to cone 10, around 1290ºC, in my gas kiln. The results are always difficult to predict, which is one of the things I like the most about these experiments. Some materials produce effects that become significant parts of my practice, while others end up in the materials box and are unlikely to ever be used again.

I’ve made a much longer video documenting this entire series of experiments, from preparing the materials and throwing the bowls through to the finished results after firing. If you’d like to see the tests in more detail, the full video is now on YouTube, accessible via the link in my Linktree.

I’d also be interested to hear if there are any particularly reactive or unusual metals, minerals or other materials you think I should try in a future round of tests. Thanks for watching!
