Wrapped up the international summer school of molecular medicine at Shenzhen University Medical School. Grateful for new knowledge, lab time and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet Nobel Laureate Barry Marshall.

Barry Marshall is an Australian physician and microbiologist best known for discovering that Helicobacter pylori bacteria cause most peptic ulcers and gastric cancer.

At the time, his theory challenged decades of medical belief. To prove it, he famously drank a culture of H. pylori himself, developed gastritis, and then cured it with antibiotics, demonstrating that bacteria were the real cause.

For this groundbreaking work, he and pathologist Robin Warren were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2005. The chance to meet the person whose discovery revolutionized medicine and saved millions of lives is something I can’t take for granted.

I was also deeply impressed by the warmth of Chinese hospitality and kindness, dedication and work ethic of the people, who honor their rich cultural heritage while embracing progress with so much determination.
