Tom Waitsโ€™ favourite books of all time ๐Ÿ“–โžก๏ธโ  โ  Tom Waits is a man who places extreme importance on the nurturing and cultivating of intellectual culture. A singer-songwriter, an actor and a composer, a poet and an avid reader of literature, Tom Waits devours artistic information like a boozehound searching for his next drink. A fitting silhouette for the archetypal troubadour.โ  โ  Waitsโ€™ ex-girlfriend, Bobi Thomas, once described the endless nights he would tirelessly stay awake until five or six in the morning with no other companion than his mountain of reading material to keep him company. โ€œHeโ€™d tell me how inspired he was by some short story or other, and I think that was the source of his muse,โ€ Thomas wrote in the 2009 biography Lowside of the Road. โ€œSome writers go to the movies to get that emotional power, and then they write,โ€ Thomas said before adding: โ€œI think Tom got a lot of it from books.โ€โ  โ  Waits, a crooning jazz pianist who has since developed his understanding of music into rock, blues, and experimental genres, has always allowed his inspirations to directly impact his creative output. The Beat Generation, Bob Dylan, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Charles Bukowski all became a major focal point for Waits as he continued to divulge literature and music at an incredible rate.โ  โ  In the past, Waits has shown his admiration for the aforementioned artists with cover versions and readings of their work and, when speaking of his experience with Burroughs, Waits once wrote: โ€œ[He] was as solid as a metal desk and his text was the branch this bundle would swing from. His cut-up text and open process of finding a language for this story became a river of words for me to draw from in the lyrics of the songs. He brought wisdom and a voice to the piece that is woven throughout.โ€โ  โ  Read more on our ๐Ÿ”— in bio โ  โ  โœ๏ธ: Lee Thomasโ  โ  ๐Ÿ“ธ: J.B. Mondinoโ

When I was maybe 6 years old, my brother and I raised caterpillars into butterflies with my mom. We squealed at the gooey touch of the worm-like creatures, and panicked when they cocooned into brown, scaley shells, mystified by the curtain pulled over their existence. One day, out emerged ethereal, orange and black speckled beings with fluttering wings. We unzipped the small netting enclosure and our butterflies flew away into the Californian vista. Butterflies will forever remind me of mom. Almost a year and a half after losing her, every butterfly that comes to me has her in it. And strangely, there are a lot outside of my window in Brooklyn. This PFW season, I had the honor to work alongside my US and global teams on the ground to support the execution of Kaleidoscope, @zimmermannโ€™s Spring 27 RTW collection. The vision emulates this idea of quiet strength, its existence in fragility, and the fleeting moments of the day. All points that resonate with me especially when thinking of my mom. I could go on and on. But all that to say, mom was with me in Paris this season - in her ethereal, delicate form - however that may be taking shape.
