We’re so pleased that the Friendship exhibition (Oakwell Hall, Birstall) features on the frontpage of the @theyorkshirepost today.
Our 19c portrait of Charlotte Brontë (Kirklees Collection) is the centre-piece of a new permanent exhibition, focusing on the significance of the lifelong friendships that began at school in Mirfield: Mary Taylor, Ellen Nussey and Margaret Wooler.
The exhibition highlights the importance of these friendships to Charlotte’s personal life and literary accomplishments, raising the question, why has this story been overlooked?
The 19c portrait on porcelain is painted by an unknown artist, which provides a new opportunity for research. We do know that it’s a copy after the famous portrait in chalk by George Richmond hung in the @nationalportraitgallery.
Elizabeth Gaskell remembered seeing the Richmond portrait at the Haworth parsonage, and a copy of it appeared in her biography – a publication that wouldn’t have happened without Ellen Nussey.
The friendship exhibition is timely, as the @bronteparsonagemuseum is displaying a portrait of her sister, Emily Brontë - loaned from @nationalportraitgallery until 31 Oct 2025.
Other objects displayed in ‘Friendship’ include Ellen Nussey’s writing desk and the The Eruption of Vesuvius (1794) by Olivio D’Anna – a painting once hung in Red House, Mary Taylor’s family home, which features in Charlotte’s novel ‘Shirley’ (1849).
This exhibition is an important addition to the places to visit for those who seek to discover more about the Brontë’s reach across Yorkshire and walk in Charlotte’s footsteps.
The exhibition is supported by the former Friends of Red House (2012-2016) and, Friends of Oakwell Hall and Country Park*
Dr Janine Sykes is giving curator tours tomorrow and each month, see link below to book.
*The 2nd photo features the Mayor of Kirklees Liz Smaje, alongside two ‘Friends of Oakwell’, and Curator, Dr Janine Sykes.
