I’ve spent a lot of time over the last five or so years being so self conscious about how haggard this car looks. Or to clarify, I was self conscious about how haggard looking I let this car become.
I would obsess over the spot of rust that started poking out in the quarter panel, how much clear coat had peeled off from removing my livery, and how bent the front end looked.
It had gotten to the point where I was embarrassed to drive it around. This paired with travel nursing and troubles getting the car road legal lead to the car sitting for a few years.
I had to really remind myself that there really isn’t anything wrong with this car. It’s a pleasure to drive every time I turn the key. In the 18 years I’ve owned it, it’s never left me stranded due to a mechanical issue. It runs and drives phenomenally still, it’s just a little rough around the edges.
Everything that bothered me about this car was a direct result of enjoying the car the way I always liked to. Driving it to and from racetracks, driving it at all of those racetrack, driving it to get food, driving just for the sake of driving it. Every scratch, every dent, every imperfection has a story. Everything about this thing is personal to me, it’s been a part of my life long before I ever owned it. And I’m grateful to this car for every chapter it’s been with me.
This summer has been a real eye opener for me. It’s the first full year I’ve had the car completely street legal since 2019. I’ve been driving it every opportunity I get this year, and it’s been incredible. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I’ve made some simple but impactful visual changes in the last year.
I definitely still want to take steps towards restoration of this car, but I’m so much less stressed about getting it done as soon as possible. This is the first time in a very long time for me that enjoying this car hasn’t relied on a deadline. There’s no track day, there’s no car show, there’s no estimated time of completion for anything. It’s just me and my Milano Red 1999 Honda Civic Si.
