In the late 1990s, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal began questioning the price of his signature basketball shoes after a mother confronted him about how expensive they were for ordinary families. Shaq later recalled that the encounter made him realise many of his young fans could not afford the sneakers carrying his name. Determined to make basketball footwear more accessible, O’Neal eventually developed affordable shoes sold through Walmart, with many models priced around $20 to $30. His budget friendly footwear became a major success, with Shaq claiming that hundreds of millions of pairs have been sold over the years. In 1998, O’Neal and Reebok parted ways, although contemporary reports described the separation as mutual. In 2021, Shaq said his affordable shoe business had sold over 400 million pairs, a figure that has not been independently verified. His decision helped establish a footwear brand built around the belief that every child deserves access to stylish, affordable sneakers, regardless of their family’s income. 🏀👟❤️

@szilvesztermako has had a big year. He has photographed major celebrities from Elle Fanning to John Galliano to Rihanna, been featured on cover after cover, held a showcase in New York, and developed a distinct visual language that has made audiences declare that fashion editorial is back. But we live in a time where the attention economy moves faster than artistic processes. Online users and some publications have noted how Makó’s plethora of cover shoots this year—there are no less than a dozen—has rendered outlets like Vogue, Elle, and Wall Street Journal homogenous. In the same calendar year as Makó’s meteoric rise to prominence, some who so recently showered Makó’s work with praise and adoration have begun to express boredom with his aesthetic. Across social media platforms, fans, critics, and commentators began to weigh in. “Not the fucking sad, dim box again,” one commenter said. “At this point he might as well just be Photoshopping heads onto the same outfits,” said another. It’s worth noting that Makó reportedly eschews digital processing, AI, and CGI when creating his images. But furthermore, is the concept really the “same” across Makó’s shoots? Or are we confusing the artist’s unique authorship with our own appetite for fresh new content, delivered at faster speeds than any artist can (or should) have to produce? And in this media climate, is it possible for beloved, standout image creators to build longstanding, legacy careers? Or does the audience gobble them up too fast? The best person to speak on this is the artist himself. We spoke to Makó about his year, the work he has done, and the peaks and valleys of finding mass acclaim in a world full of armchair critics. Swipe through to read what Szilveszter Makó has to say.
#JenniferLopez is reportedly facing some behind-the-scenes drama over her upcoming $100 million Netflix thriller, “The Last Mrs. Parrish.” Page Six reports that J.Lo has allegedly butted heads with director Robert Zemeckis over the film’s final cut following reportedly disappointing test screenings. One insider claimed, “She’s tried to take it over. She fancies herself a filmmaker,” adding that Lopez had been spending time in the editing room. The source continued, “Behind the scenes, everyone’s saying it’s a #BlakeLively [situation].” The comparison references Lively’s highly publicized dispute with director and co-star Justin Baldoni over their competing visions for “It Ends With Us.” Another source alleged Lopez was attempting to take control of the editing process, but suggested she was simply trying to “salvage” the project. However, Lopez, Zemeckis, and #Netflix have strongly denied allegations of any tension, issuing a joint statement calling the allegations “categorically false.” Netflix also pushed back on claims that the film performed poorly during screenings, insisting, “The film tested well, particularly with fans of Jennifer.” The upcoming thriller, expected to arrive in 2027, stars Lopez alongside Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Isabel May. Based on the bestselling novel, the story follows a con artist who infiltrates a wealthy couple’s lives with plans to replace the wife, only to discover her target has secrets of her own.
