As much as I love the work that I do with exotics, I also enjoy sharing that passion and teaching other how to help these creatures. In this video, I was coaching my vet assistant (also an aspiring veterinarian) throughout this blood draw and she got it on the first go!
We used to call this condition metabolic bone disease (MBD) but now we are starting to recognise that this is an umbrella term and that there are different kinds of metabolic bone diseases. Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism (NSHP) being one of them.
Aside from blood tests, you can also use radiographs as monitoring tools for NSHP. Oftentimes, these guys have poor cortical bone density particularly in the long bones. As a result of this condition if left untreated, can lead to brittle bones and pathological fractures.
NSHP can take weeks to months to reverse and recover from. In some severe cases we may resort to giving calcitonin injections. But with regular dietary calcium supplementation, UV-B exposure, adequate heating, and a little patience, these guys can make a full recovery.
