There is substantial historical evidence that Moroccan soldiers serving in the French Army during World War II committed rape against civilians, including women and, in some documented accounts, men. The evidence is much stronger for widespread sexual violence against women, only some against men. The most notorious incidents occurred during the Allied campaign in Italy in 1944, particularly after the Battle of Monte Cassino. These crimes became known as the Marocchinate, an Italian term referring to sexual assaults associated with Moroccan troops. What happened in Italy? Moroccan soldiers serving in French colonial formations, especially the Goumiers, were accused of widespread sexual violence against Italian civilians during May and June 1944. Historical accounts describe: Women and girls being raped, sometimes by multiple soldiers. Men and boys also being sexually assaulted. Male civilians being attacked or killed while attempting to protect relatives. Looting and other violence accompanying sexual assaults. These were serious atrocities, but it is important to distinguish the documented pattern of violence from claims that most Moroccan soldiers participated. How common was it? Historian Tommaso Baris documents frequent rapes and other violence during the 1944 offensive. An Italian women’s organization subsequently recorded approximately 12,000 alleged victims of sexual violence, although the precise number remains disputed. French military authorities prosecuted some perpetrators, including soldiers who were executed. Other crimes went unreported or unpunished. Regarding male victims specifically: Accounts of sexual assaults against men and boys exist, but the surviving research does not establish how frequently they occurred.
