First, I made it a GOAL.

Without a goal, I have no plan. Without a plan, I take no action.

The first thing I did when I turned 70 in January was pick this October beach vacation. I need a date. I need a point in time to hold me accountable.

I had 8 months to train my glutes with focus. I trained them twice a week, but I didn't change my training schedule. I still trained just 4 days a week for an hour. What changed was my intensity. I trained with more focus, pushed a little harder, and lifted a little heavier.

I stay somewhat lean all year, but not lean enough to wear a thong! So, 9 weeks out, I started eating leaner, but I still kept my 3 cheat meals a week.

I was actually ready in about 7 weeks, so I had to start eating more, adding additional carbs and protein. Otherwise, I would have just ended up skinny.

All my cardio is done at home on a Stair Climber before breakfast. Over those 9 weeks, I went from 20 minutes and 1,000 steps to 30 minutes and 2,500 steps by increasing the speed. I usually did the Stair Climber 5–6 days a week.

And yes, we still had our 3 date nights a week!

Can I do this again at 71?

Well, I'm actually only about 3 months away, so I've already made another GOAL. I want to improve on what I did at 70.

I started this week.

A GOAL. A PLAN. A DATE. And a REASON to push myself.

Your twenties are often a decade of rapid change and self-discovery, where the structures of school and family give way to the freedom—and uncertainty—of building an independent life. Many people spend these years navigating first real jobs, new cities, friendships that shift as priorities change, and the early stages of figuring out what they actually want rather than what they were told to pursue. It’s a time of trial and error: career pivots, relationships that teach hard lessons, financial tightropes, and the slow process of learning how to take care of yourself when no one else is handling the logistics. At the same time, the twenties can feel electrifying—late nights, spontaneous trips, deep conversations, and the sense that almost anything is still possible.

Yet the decade is rarely as linear or glamorous as it appears from the outside. Plenty of people wrestle with comparison, anxiety about falling behind, or the quiet pressure to have it all figured out by thirty. Progress often looks uneven: some years feel productive and expansive, while others feel stuck or directionless. What tends to define the twenties more than any single achievement is the gradual accumulation of self-knowledge—learning your own limits, values, and strengths through lived experience rather than theory. By the end of the decade, many find that the version of themselves they started with has been revised more than once, and that the most valuable outcomes weren’t the milestones themselves but the clarity and resilience gained along the way.
