On December 15, 1941, Ruth Lee, an American woman of Chinese descent working as a restaurant hostess in Miami, was photographed sunbathing beside a large Chinese flag. Just eight days earlier, Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor, bringing the United States into World War II. Lee displayed the flag to make her Chinese heritage clear and avoid being mistaken for Japanese. 🇯🇵

Following the attack, anti Japanese hostility spread rapidly across America, affecting Japanese Americans regardless of their citizenship or loyalty. Chinese Americans also faced the risk of being targeted because of their appearance, prompting many to wear identification badges or display Chinese symbols to distinguish themselves from Japanese people.

The flag beside Lee belonged to the Republic of China, which was fighting Japan during the war and was an American ally. Her photograph became a striking reminder of the fear and racial prejudice experienced by Asian communities during World War II, revealing how even an ordinary day at the beach could require precautions against discrimination. 🇨🇳📸

This week, Co-CEO Sirish Rao (@sirishr) caught up with actor and longtime environmental advocate Pierce Brosnan (@piercebrosnanofficial) during his visit to see “That Green Ideal: Emily Carr and the Idea of Nature” and “Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change.”

A prolific artist himself, Brosnan has described painting as “very therapeutic,” sharing with Vanity Fair in 2023: “Painting has helped me find my way in life. Whenever I feel angst, I’ll go to the canvas. It brings me comfort and it’s just so joyful.”

Mission accomplished. Thanks for visiting, Pierce!
