Is Britain's welfare system helping people or holding them back?

About two years ago I met Gavin, a taxi driver who was trying to come off sickness benefit. He had fully recovered from a heart operation and no longer needed the support, but was told he could not sign himself off and needed to wait to be reassessed. And, until he was, he had no choice but to keep taking the money.

When I followed up his story, I was told it was probably a glitch. “Give me his telephone number,” said Liz Kendall, then the work and pensions secretary. “I’ll call him.” The call never came. Gavin has now been waiting almost four years.

Today, we can reveal why: reassessments stopped in lockdown and were never properly restarted. Some 1.8 million claimants have been waiting for an average of two years. One has been waiting for 16 years. Gavin’s tip led to an investigation into the welfare state, its flaws — and the social and economic dividend that could come with reform | ✍️ Fraser Nelson

Nicotine pouches or caffeine?
I use both strategically. Coffee in the morning. Nicotine in very small amounts during long surgeries for focus. Not cigarettes. Not chronic use. Dose matters. Context matters.

Red light therapy or cold plunge?
Both powerful. Cold is hormetic stress. Red light is regeneration. If I had to choose long term, I go with red light. Mitochondria win.

8 hours of sleep or perfect HRV?
Sleep. Always sleep. HRV is a metric. Sleep is biology. Trackers are accountability tools, not the goal.

Brushing after every meal or once before bed?
For most people, once before bed is essential. Twice daily is ideal. But brushing after every meal is not smart, especially immediately after eating. Let saliva buffer the pH for at least 30 minutes.

Health isn’t about extremes.
It’s about timing, dosage, and biology.
