Nea Smyrni is an area of Athens which was settled and developed by refugees from Smyrna (now Izmir) after the Greco-Turkish war of 1919-1922 which resulted in the “Catastrophe”, as the Greeks call it. It was the end of more than 3,000 years of Greek civilization in Asia Minor and saw approximately 1.5 million Greek refugees arrive from Turkey in an exchange of populations.
