ATTENTION braiders: Your parts are important! Parting is crucial because it affects the overall look, neatness, and longevity.
1. Neatness & precision: clean parts create a polished appearance. Making a well uniformed and designed style.
- use a sharp parting comb (use fingernail file to make it sharper if need be).
2. Scalp health: proper parting ensures that hair is evenly distributed. Too much tension around the edges and nape of the neck can be uncomfortable and cause breakage.
- DON’T use too much gel, DO use enough to make parts slick and mold into place.
3. Style longevity: When your hair is well-sectioned, your braids will last longer and have less frizz over-time.
- This helps the style stay neat as it grows out.
4. Ease of braiding: Clean parts makes it easier to grip and see the direction of the braid, adding to neatness of the style without stray hairs being in the way.
- Keeping a tamed canvas (your clients head) ensures that you can easily braid without frustration from random hairs flying around during the process. This is why we use clips and clamps.
5. For box braids, do brick layer parts. For stitch braids, part ear to center, then center to nape (same for zigzag).
