Thank you for having me & for bringing such an extraordinary group of human beings together in Paris for the Free Palestine Tour.

The organizers, the volunteers, the students, friends, lovers and strangers. Every single person in that room that showed up.

As a Palestinian and as a journalist, I have spent years documenting people who commit the worst crimes imaginable and walk away untouched. Our colleagues in Gaza were killed in their press vests. The men who gave the orders still hold press conferences. You learn to carry that, and you learn to expect very little from anyone with power and a platform.

Then I met Ben, and within minutes of talking to you, you felt like a long lost family member I had somehow lost track of. You know where you stand and you stand there calmly, without asking to be thanked for it. Doing the right thing has never seemed to cost you your gentleness or your dignity. I keep thinking about how rare that is and how grateful I am that you exist.

My grandfather was from Jaffa. Every one of us is searching for somewhere to belong, and some of us have been searching for generations. This weekend I found a piece of it with all of you. Thousands of us, our voices shouted “On est là.”

High school students who had blocked their school gates that month were singing in the crowd. Tamer brought Lyd onto the stage. I was surrounded by people who have held onto their humanity while the world spends billions trying to take it from them.

I came home lighter, and changed.

Thank you, brother. Pour Gaza. Pour Palestine. Pour la musique! We are still here. Free Palestine, until it’s backwards! ✊🏾
