Cats are prey animals!
Yes, also predators, obviously! But they’re right in the middle of the food chain, meaning they have evolved to be wary of animals who are larger than them. Like, for instance, humans!
Keeping those prey instincts in mind is a great way to make them feel more secure in your environment. Simple things like…
✨ Providing high places or hiding spots to escape to, and making sure they’re not dead ends
✨ Interacting with them on their level and avoiding “looming” or chasing
✨ Seeking consent for petting or physical interaction, and making sure visitors to your home do the same
…can make a massive difference for your cat’s wellbeing.
Obviously, some cats love acting like American Girl dolls, and will tolerate being grabbed & smushed. But when you’re meeting a new cat, or frustrated by your own cat’s skittishness, remember that as a species, they’re hard-wired to be wary of you because you’re big and scary.
